I always traveled alone the years before I had a boyfriend. In my mind, everyone needs a spur-of-the-moment trip— a person and a journey to walk on. Two years ago, I went to Miami which is the first place I traveled alone to in America, and it was love at first sight. Miami is where everyone goes to play in America when it comes to the sun and beach. Famous for cruises, sands, Cubans, beautiful people, and wild clubs/parties – Miami is such an unexpectedly fantastic place. It’s always fun, and never boring.

I was very nervous when the plane landed in Miami International Airport (MIA). I had never traveled to any place in America by myself, and my memory of the U.S. was from six years previous when I lived with my host family. I had reserved a hotel next to South Beach. The price of the hotel is a little higher than other places because I stuck to a more touristy area, considering the safety issue. Also, I didn’t go outside at night when I was traveling alone there. On my way to my hotel, I looked out of the window, and the amazing sights attracted me. Thus I began to feel relaxed. I started to love this city — love the beautiful people and the beautiful sea. It was the trip that inspired me to travel more.
Solo travel gave me the ultimate freedom. In my first time to Miami, I did not go to many places of interest. I even spent the whole day on just one beach— swimming, eating and enjoying the sunshine. I also walked around the island to take in the beauty of Miami. There’s no one to pull you in any direction or override your reason [1]. I don’t need to go to the crowded top sites which makes me uncomfortable. It’s just time to relax, something Miami does in style. As a foodie, I found some good restaurants there. Sometimes, I just asked the waiters and people around me to choose the dishes for me. They know what’s the best and that always works.

With a very mixed mostly minority population, Miami has different cultures, and people are a lot of fun. In my later days there, I visited the Ancient Spanish monastery, Coral Castle, Everglades National Park, and Little Havana, which are all unique attractions. There are Miami’s Cuban neighborhoods and also the Spanish style buildings. If your budget is high enough, plan a late-afternoon spa treatment. The Mandarin Oriental’s spa treatments are world-renowned for its Asian and Thai influence [2]. Gradually, I began to love my solo trip and enjoyed this special travel. Although I will admit that solo travel is not for everyone, you’ll never learn that if you don’t travel by yourself at least once. For me, the greatest reward of traveling alone is personal growth. “Each time you go away, you learn to become more independent and confident, and in tune with your emotions and desires” [1].
