A Lovely Greek Island

This week, we will dive into a lovely Greek island — Santorini. It is a blue island with blue roofs, blue walls, and the blue Aegean Sea. “Santorini erupts with charm. A volcano embraced by the Aegean, this island-phenomenon in the Cyclades gives its visitors a mythical experience.” [1] This place is about as Aegean paradise as my inner traveler can imagine, which has been on my bucket list for a very long time.

Most travelers fly directly to Santorini (Thira) National Airport which is the most time-saving way to get there. From June to August is always the peak tourist season in Santorini. If you want to avoid crowds, you can choose to go there in other seasons since it’s still warm in Spring and Autumn, and about 70 degrees Fahrenheit even in October.

Although Santorini is known as a good place for honeymoon travels, you will still be able to find a lot of fun there.

Sunset in Oia

On your first day, you may take a taxi to stylish Oia, a clifftop village on the northwestern tip of Santorini. The most famous activity is to enjoy the sunset there. Just stand there for a few minutes, the energy of the landscape is palpable. When the fiery sun sinks into the Aegean, this scene will be forever emblazoned across your mind and cherished in your heart [2]. It already is a ritual in Santorini.

After having enough fun in Oia, you can hike to Fira that runs along the cliffs of the island and offers you spectacular views. There cannot be a better choice if you are a photography enthusiast. There are also a lot of stores on the pedestrianized main street in town, taking in all the colors as other travelers do since there are a lot of local art and textiles sold.

Colorful beach

Beaches in Santorini are always a good choice because they’re unique. The sand has exotic colors like black, red and white; a product of volcanic sand. “At Kokkini Paralia (Red Beach), Aspri Paralia (White Beach), Perivolos, Perissa and Kamari, the volcanic earth creates immortal works of art. [1]”

In addition to all of the things above, one of the biggest draws to Santorini is the yummy Greek food which is around almost every corner of the island. There are some recommendations for you below that you have to try at least once when you visit Santorini [3].

– Saganaki (Fried cheese in filo pastry covered in honey)

– Greek Salad & Wine

– Tomato Gefthedes (Tomato fritters)

– Fava me Koukia (Mashed up fava beans)

– Keftes/Kofta – ground meat – kinda like sausages.
